A Digital Elevation Map (DEM) is a digital representation of the Earth's surface that displays the elevations of different geographic points as a grid of cells. Each cell, also known as a pixel, in the DEM contains a value representing the elevation of the corresponding location on the Earth's surface. DEMs are used to depict the three-dimensional topography of a region, including mountains, valleys, hills, and other terrain features.
DEM data is typically collected using various remote sensing technologies, such as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), radar, and photogrammetry. These methods involve sending out signals or capturing images from an aerial or satellite platform, and then using the time it takes for the signal to return or processing the images to calculate the distance between the sensor and the Earth's surface. This distance information is then used to create a grid of elevation values.
DEM data can be represented in different formats, such as raster or grid formats, where each cell contains a numerical value representing elevation. This data can be visualized to create contour maps, shaded relief maps, slope and aspect maps, and more. DEMs are widely used in various fields, including geology, hydrology, environmental modeling, urban planning, agriculture, and disaster management, to analyze terrain characteristics, water flow, erosion, and other geographical phenomena.
Digital elevation maps are one of the most useful products created by Drone Photography. and Video
Note: The Digital Elevation Maps created by Ashlar Aerial serve as tools for visualization and discussion purposes. It's important to understand that these maps do not serve as a substitute for professional surveying. Nevertheless, they can be valuable to your surveyor as a visual tool during conversations about the extent and details of your surveying undertaking.
